Asset Management Techniques

How does one go about taking care of one’s property – one’s worldly possessions? Well, the majority of people put their money in the bank, put the jewellery in a safe and insure the rest. But insurance is not really taking care of your possessions, is it? It is taking care of yourself so that you do not have renew them with your own money.

In the old days, and even now, I presume in some places, you would employ a boy to watch over your sheep or cattle or bring them in at night for fear of big cats, wolves or rustlers. These were an early kind of security guard and indeed rich people had and frequently still do have personal body guards.

What if you had a large office with a hundred laptop computers – laptops because employees had to do field work too? How would you keep track on all those? A car is another good case in point and construction site machinery is being stolen all the time even from under the noses of (or with the help of) private security firms.

So what can you do? Get dogs? That works usually, but they can be poisoned. Install video cameras and passive infra-red movement sensors connected to a control centre? That works and a lot of firms and private houses have it, but it is very expensive.

As a cheap alternative, the police were handing out free pens in the UK, which wrote in invisible ink. The idea was to put your postcode and house number. This ink became visible under a certain kind of light. That is all very well if you have a suspect or found property.

Bar codes are not practical, the pen is better. It all comes back to insurance or security.

However, there is another way that is becoming affordable. The idea has been around for about 85 years, but it was too pricey to use on anything less significant than an airplane or a battle tank.

I am talking about radio frequency identification or RFID for short. The idea is the same one that aircraft have been using since during the Second World War – a transponder emits precoded information in response to a demand from an RF reader.

Details regarding ownership and particulars of what the item is can be written to an RFID chip also called a tag and the tag can then be glued inside the item that it is to protect.

There are two types of tag: the passive and the active. Passive tags will only respond if details are requested by a reader, whereas an active tag is always on.

Many entrepreneurs use RFID tagging to keep track of their assets. In the instance of livestock, most cattle are tagged these days. Most big offices have their IT devices tagged as well and we all know that clothing stores have been tagging garments for years, although maybe you did not know what that button was that they were taking off at the checkout.

People are already tagging their dogs, cats and cars and it will not be long before these asset management techniques will be used extensively at home too. Insurance companies may demand on it.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece writes on several topics, but is currently involved with the RFID asset management. If you would like to know more, please go to our website at Active RFID Management.

How Does Hard Water Affect The Lifespan Of Domestic Appliances?

The large majority of households will be fed with a domestic water supply which is defined as “hard water”. This is just a definition which is applied to signify water which has a fairly high concentration of minerals in it. Magnesium and calcium are the two most important minerals. According to the World Health Organisation, there are no health problems associated with hard water supplies – but it can affect the effective operation and lifespan of a variety of different domestic appliances.

Mineral deposits can build up in water pipes, heating systems and in domestic appliances. Appliances which use hot water – kettles, steam irons, dishwashers and washing machines are especially susceptible to this. This is due to the fact that heating the water liberates many of the minerals which then reform as “scale”. As well as domestic appliances, the central heating system may be affected.

There are a number of different variables which influence how much scale is generated. The temperature of the water is one of the strongest influencing factors on this process. More scale is produced at higher temperatures. Running dishwashers and washing machines at a lower temperature setting will reduce the amount of scale produced and help to ensure that these appliances continue to operate efficiently and have an extended working life. Using soaps and detergents which have an anti-scaling agent included will also help.

With appliances such as kettles, coffee makers and steam irons, it’s not really practical to operate at lower temperatures. However, some kettles include filters – which can help to prevent various minerals getting into the sensitive heater elements. Many modern irons now come complete with removable anti-scale traps which gather the scale deposits for easy cleaning just by flushing it under running water. It’s also possible to get a variety of anti-scale chemicals and cleaners which can be used to clean your appliances periodically.

There may be no health problems as a result of a hard water supply, but some people will dislike the flavour of hot drinks and food prepared using this. In this case, a water filter could be used. Various types exist, ranging from simple jug type filters to on tap, under sink and even whole house filters. They are all effective, cheaper than you might imagine and relatively quick to install.

It may seem like an inconvenience, but it’s well worth the effort to counter the effects of a hard water supply. In addition to the improved operational efficiency of your domestic appliances, use of the correct detergents and the selection of a lower operating temperature, combined with scale removal from time to time, will save you money by extending the life of your appliances.

A Tefal steam generator iron – will cut your ironing time in half. You’ll wonder how you ever got by without one.

Getting To Know More About Solar Power

Everyone must be aware on the right way of conserving power and electricity. We should not just sit and watch how our mother nature disorient and fade out. We must act and let us start on the simple things we can do.

By being a concerned citizen, we can contribute to energy conservation by being mindful of our electricity consumption and helping our community in simple ways. One modern way is by building your own solar power to produce clean energy. There are no harmful side effects to be worried about with regard to this indigenous way of saving electrical energy.

The use of solar panels at home is advantageous and convenient. Since photovoltaic panels are now commercially available, producing solar power became easier. Solar power has been playing a major role even on the old times in providing the needs of early people. The common solar power installation was able to cover the passive heating needs, hot water supplies, and the occasional active heating system.

Aside from using it at home, solar power can also be used commercially. Even businesses resort to the use of solar power system because it is a practical way. Due to the powerful heat of the sun, people makes use of its energy for different uses.

The alternative form of energy is obviously the answer to the growing domestic needs of every nation. Solar power works good in generating electrical energy needed by homes and businesses. It can be possible by using batteries for storage purposes.

Solar power produces supplementary type of electricity to power up household appliances and electronic devices throughout the day. It also covers the night time through the efficient banks of batteries that hold the “charge” received from the heat of the sun.

Some DIY solar power installation provides mutual benefits to the users and providers. It makes use of “net metering” that actually “sells” the electric power back to the utility company resulting to a lower monthly bill.

Consumers rise in numbers every year and the solar power awareness can really help in making the Earth a more sustainable planet and a conducive place to live in. Some solar power system does not work 24 hours straight but it is not an issue since it can still help in slowly decreasing the electric consumption.

Since there are different DIY solar power manuals that can be found all around us, it is still suggested to seek for professional help when necessary. Some installation still needs supervision to ensure that it will work. This type of power is a very good investment and can definitely yield positive result.

A Brief Guide To Choosing The Right Ironing Board

There’s not much doubt that an ironing board is a dull and mundane item of household equipment to which very few people give much consideration. Nevertheless, every home will have one. It is an essential household item and – if you pick the wrong type – you could well finish up with poorly ironed clothes, take longer to get through your ironing than you need to and even strain your back.

Most people use steam irons these days – or possibly even steam generator irons, which are becoming popular due to the fact that they can reduce the amount of time spent ironing by 50%. For either of these types of irons, an ironing board with an open mesh surface construction is a good choice. This allows the steam to pass through the garment being pressed, through the cover of the ironing board and through the mesh surface of the board itself. When a lot of items are being ironed in one session, this helps to avoid any build up of condensation which might otherwise cause both the garments and the cover of the board to become soggy.

Ironing will be easier if the cover of the board is smooth. It should be secure and with no tendency to slip or move whilst pressing your garments. A cover which is elasticated around the edges, possibly with a couple of cross ties under the bottom surface of the board, will be unlikely to move around on you when you’re ironing. Choosing a metalised cover will mean that some of the iron’s heat is reflected. This will help to smooth the underside of the garment whilst you are passing the iron over the top surface and may reduce ironing time.

The shape and size of the board will depend upon what you generally iron. A smaller board may be easier to manipulate and store – but it will generally require more repositioning of the item being ironed. A good taper on the pointed end will be useful for getting into corners – the shoulders of shirts and blouses for example – and will also be good for collars.

Scissor action legs are pretty much the norm. It should be possible to adjust the height to a level that suits you and doesn’t cause any back strain. If you like to iron from a seated position then legs which have a curve on them – so that you don’t bang your knees on them – are a good idea. The legs should provide good support. A broad T-piece, or legs that splay to a good width and have a connecting bar, are usually good options.

The support for the iron itself should be sturdy enough to take the weight of the iron. Wire type extension platforms are usually okay for standard steam irons. The extra weight presented by a steam generator iron may mean that a longer board which just features a heat resistant plate on a slightly extended surface is better. Alternatively, the base unit of steam generator irons may be positioned on the floor – as long as the connecting hose between base unit and iron is long enough to permit this.

Check out our Tefal steam generator iron buyer’s guide and discover how you can snap up a bargain and cut the amount of time you spend ironing.

Hybrid Electric Engines: Some Information

Have you ever wondered about hybrid cars? They certainly look stylish and modern, but what is it about them that makes them so different and so special? After all, most cars look the same these days, do they not? They are all designed by computer to be aerodynamic and aerodynamic is aerodynamic, so they all end up looking indistinguishable to anyone who is not an aficionado.

Well, the fact is that the difference between a hybrid car and a standard car lies under the bonnet. There are different types of hybrid vehicles as well, but the most widespread kind has a hybrid electric engine. Therefore, you could say that what makes hybrid cars different from most other, ordinary cars is their engine.

Or engines really, because hybrid electric cars basically have two engines. One, the internal combustion engine, runs on petrol, LPG or diesel and the other, the electric motor, runs off electricity stored in an array of powerful batteries. On the other hand, ordinary cars only have an internal combustion engine. It is a good idea to examine these two types of engine separately.

First of all the electric motor. Electrical energy is generated by several components on the car and stored in a large bank or array of heavy-duty batteries. The electricity is created by the turning of the internal combustion engine, just as with a standard car, when it is in use, but also by the wheels or / and the car’s braking system. Different models have different methods of creating this electricity, but they are all very hi-tech and very effective.

When the car’s internal computers decide that the car no longer needs the strength of the internal combustion engine, it will turn it off and switch to the electric motor instead. The conditions where this might happen are, for example, when you are driving slowly in inner-city traffic, when you are cruising at moderate speed on a flat road or when you are going down hill. This saves a considerable amount of fuel, which is clearly a great saving to you.

However, there are times when you need more power than the batteries can supply you, for instance, when accelerating hard, when overtaking or when climbing a hill. At times such as these, the electric motor will close down and the combustion engine will take over and start supplying power to the accelerator and electricity to the batteries. When the need for extra power has ceased, the batteries will take over again.

These choices are all taken by the hybrid electric vehicle’s (HEV’s) on board computer system and you will not be aware of much other that a rush of power or a quietening of the propulsion system. This works very well in most cases, but some drivers of HEV’s would like to have a manual override for unusual circumstances, such as an undulating terrain.

All in all, cars with hybrid electric engines work very well at reducing fuel bills but they are still too dear to be much more than a gimmicky toy and a salve to the conscience for the well-to-do.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece writes on a lot of topics, but is at present concerned with hybrid electric engines. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at New Hybrid Vehicles.

Kindle Books – Amazon’s Insurance Policy

The Kindle reader has been a fantastic product for Amazon since it was first released in November of 2007. Amazon’s strong association with both electronics and books made the Kindle the ideal product for them and, after an upgrade to the Kindle 2.0 in February of 2009, followed by the launch of the large format DX model in the summer of the same year, it went on to become the number one selling product on the Amazon site.

Over the festive period of 2009, the Kindle became Amazon’s most gifted product ever. On Christmas day of 2009, Amazon sold more Kindle books than physical volumes for the first time ever. Admittedly this was probably due to people who had received a Kindle as a Christmas gift testing it out by downloading a Kindle book or two – but it was a landmark event for Amazon and the Kindle nonetheless.

Amazon did seem to be a slightly reluctant manufacturer on occasions however. They seemed to bend over backwards to ensure that Kindle books could be read by people who didn’t have Kindles. At the moment, Amazon has released free Kindle “Apps” for a wide variety of different devices – many of which would be viewed as competitors of the Kindle. These include the PC, the Apple Mac, the Blackberry, the iPod Touch, the iPhone, the iPad and any device running Android. Amazon looked to be their own competition at times.

However, the method in Amazon’s madness became clear after the release of the Apple iPad. This saw the price of e-book readers fall as many consumers rushed to buy Apple’s new device which, amongst its many functions, was suitable for use as an e-book reader. However, at the same time as e-book reader prices were falling, the average price of the e-books to read on them was creeping ever upwards.

Prior to the release of the iPad, Apple had negotiated a deal with the major publishing houses which allowed them to set the price of the e-book editions of their publications at pretty much whatever level they liked. The only rider was that the same e-book could not be offered at a lower price for any other reader – Amazon’s Kindle for example. Up until that point it had been Amazon’s policy to price e-books at $9.99 or less. Apple’s deal, much to the delight of the publishers, pretty much blew that out of the water. At first glance, Amazon looked to have been hit pretty hard by the release of the iPad.

A more considered analysis of the situation reveals that Amazon’s release of Kindle Apps for so many different devices was nothing short of inspired. Each App is actually an outlet for Kindle books – and with a higher average e-book price, Amazon will be able to sell Kindles for less but still make money over the lifetime of the reader by selling their Kindle books at higher prices. Even if the iPad were to wipe out Kindle sales completely – an unlikely event – Kindle books will continue to sell. And if another reader or tablet computer comes along there will, no doubt, be an “app for that” as well.

Increased Competition Drives Kindle Reader Prices Lower

The Amazon Kindle reader seemed to be the ideal product for Amazon. It totally dominated the e-book reader market, commanding about 60% of all e-book reader sales, and it was hard to see where the competition was coming from. There were many predictions of a “Kindle killer”, but despite the release of new readers by the likes of Sony, Barnes and Noble, Plastic Logic and Bookeen, the Kindle looked set to hold on to its number one position.

Then the Apple iPad came along and, although it is an entirely different device, it did look set to spoil the party somewhat. The iPad is not without some fairly major flaws of its own, and whilst most Apple devices seem to provoke a “love them or loathe them” response, the numbers of people who would buy almost anything with the Apple logo on it are certainly large enough to make a major dent in the sales of the Kindle.

As well as releasing new hardware, Apple also set up their own e-book store and they negotiated a deal with most of the major publishing houses which permitted them to set the sales price of the e-book editions of their publications at whatever they liked. The one condition to this was that they would not allow any other retailer to promote their e-book edition at a lower price than set for the Apple store. This effectively put paid to Amazon’s plans to offer all e-books at $ 9.99 or less, and e-book prices have been climbing since the deal was struck.

The price of the hardware for reading the e-books has certainly fallen in the same timespan. The Nook reader, from Barnes and Noble, has seen a price reduction to $ 199 from $259. Amazon themselves have now cut the Kindle 2.0 price to $ 189 – quite a drop from the February 2009 launch price of $ 359. The larger format Kindle DX has been upgraded with a new sharper screen and the price has been cut from $ 489 to $ 379.

So the top of the range, and freshly updated, DX reader is now over $ 100 cheaper than the entry level Apple iPad – and unlike the iPad it requires no monthly internet connection fee. The iPad is, of course, considerably more than an e-book reader – and many customers will be quite happy to pay more for a more powerful device which can be used for a variety of different applications – even if it does have a considerably shorter battery life.

Time will tell whether or not this downward price trend for e-book readers is no more than a knee-jerk reaction to the appearance of the iPad or whether it is the beginning of a new pricing policy. It may be that companies such as Barnes and Noble and Amazon could use the upward trend in e-book prices to offset lower hardware ticket prices and make their profit on the sale of e-books over the lifetime of the device. In Amazon’s case, it may be no more than a holding tactic until the next generation Kindle, complete with color screen, hits the market later this year.

Check out the Amazon Kindle for yourself and view the wide range of Kindle accessories available to help you personalise your new reader.
