Calendars And How To Appreciate Them

The calendar is such a routine, everyday thing, but how much do you actually know about the operation of it. Why is it like that?

A DAY: The Earth rotates at a reasonably fixed pace about the imaginary line running between the North and South Poles named the Earth’s Axis. The time it takes to spin once is called a ‘rotation’ and this takes just under twenty-four hours. Nevertheless, because the Earth is constantly traveling around the Sun, the exact time from noon one day to noon the next is 3 minutes 56 seconds longer and this makes a day almost exactly twenty-four hours in length.

The actual time from noon to noon differs depending where the Earth is on its celestial path around the Sun, but if you average the days in a year out, it comes to precisely twenty-four hours.

A YEAR: All nine planets in our solar system move around the Sun in approximately perfectly circular routes called orbits. Each trip around the Sun is called a revolution and all the planets orbit around the Sun in the same direction. The course the Earth takes can be verified by noting its location against the background stars.

In view of the fact that you cannot see the Sun and the stars at the same time, it is necessary to note the position of the Sun in the morning and the see which stars appear there in the night. You will see that the Sun seems to pass through the twelve constellations of the zodiac during a year.

Earth’s trip around the Sun, which seems like the Sun traveling through the zodiac takes about 365.25 days. This is different from year to year, so astronomers add or delete a second in some years to keep their time correct with the Earth’s motion.

THE SEASONS: The seasons indicate the variation in the pattern of daylight over the course of a year. Because the Earth is tilted off centre, different parts of it get different amounts of sunlight on different stages of its path around the Sun, a path that we call a year. So, between about the 21st September and late March, the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, which creates Autumn and Winter, giving less than twelve hours of daylight per day.

From April to the 20th September, the Northern Hemisphere enjoys more than twelve hours of daylight a day, producing Spring and Summer. The exact opposite occurs in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Equinoxes occur at the points in the year when there is exactly twelve hours of sunlight and darkness in the day. So, the vernal or Spring equinox is on or around the 21st March and the autumnal equinox is on or around the 21st September. Summer officially begins on the day with the greatest amount of daylight, the 21st June or summer solstice.

The winter solstice occurs on the shortest day, the 21st December. ‘Solstice’ is a combination of two words meaning ’sun standing still’ and the days are so called because they are the days when the apparent movement of the Sun reaches its extremes and reverses direction again.

Protecting Children With Mental Health Problems

Who are the predators? Predators are Cyber Stalkers, serial killers/rapists, rapists, paedophiles, women beaters, child abusers, thieves and so on. Predators often have mental problems that prevent them from behaving properly in normal society. Children with mental illnesses are often the prey of these predators, and sometimes children with mental disorders are the predators themselves. In fact, the distributor of one of the most serious viruses online came from an eighteen-year old from England.

Dangers mental disorders: Not everyone with a mental illness is a threat to society. Generally, predators with mental disorders are plagued with sociopathic, psychopathic and anti-social disorders, oppositional defiance, conduct control disorders, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorders (BPD), and psychosis. While there are a few other mental disorders that present a threat to our society, this is a list of the most common potential dangers that wait on the streets and on the Internet.

How to save a child with mental disorders from dangers : Never treat your child as if he/she has a mental disorder. Treat your child as special, yet avoid treating the child as if he/she is mentally ill, because a lot of mentally ill patients are extremely intelligent. Teach your child the same rules that other children have to live by and stick to those rules. Do not leave room for leniency when danger is present. Teach your child respect by showing respect yourself.

Children with dangerous mental disorders will often want to watch pornography, violent images, content, and so forth. This makes it difficult as a parent to defend your child. However, it is important that you enforce the laws. Never put yourself in danger while enforcing these laws, since some children with dangerous problems may cause you harm.

If the child refuses to listen to you, bring in the police and make sure that they do their job to help you enforce the rules. You may have to pay court fees and go through all sorts of rigmarole, but I can promise you that it will benefit you in the end. As a mother who is raising two boys with dangerous mental illnesses, I can tell you it isn’t easy but it can be done.

Children with mental illnesses often have brilliant minds that can often get round any parental controls and will do so without you even knowing. Take extra time than normal to monitor your child’s behaviour online. Teach your child that giving out personal details is dangerous and encourage them to request your permission when considering giving name, phone number, or other information online.

Allow your child to take some responsibility and always encourage your child to participate in family discussions that involve them. Furthermore, encourage the child to be safety conscious by asking them to report any crime committed against them.

One of the most difficult things you’ll ever have to do while raising a child with mental health problems is encouraging him/her to avoid violent images and pornography. It is almost impossible to keep them clear of this trash. However, it can be done, if you set a good example for the child to follow.

It is vital that you keep talking and listening to your child. Allow your child to express concerns, opinions, ideals, theories and so forth without demeaning the child. You will be astounded at the wisdom children with some mental illnesses have, if you will only listen to them.

The best advice I can give you for dealing with children with major mental disorders, such as psychopathy, is to seek help and stand firm. For additional child safety tips for children with mental disorders seek advice from a qualified counsellor.

Remember: Children learn what they see and hear.

Tips On Getting A College Cheerleading Scholarship

A large part of a good upbringing is a decent education. Parents have different financial resources but they also have different means of organizing their children’s education. Some parents are better at it than others. Likewise, not all children want to become doctors or dentists, no matter what their parents would like and most of us thank God for that. Diversity is the spice of life, because luckily we are not all the same.

Funding for your child’s higher education is quite another thing. The costs of higher education never seem to drop , in spite of the fact that there is a recession and parents are being laid off. State funding is also in question. Therefore, there is a huge pressure on the grants that are available.

If you are short of the requisite amount of money to send your child to college or pay for it yourself, you will have to use your best gift to try to secure a grant from private industry. You alone know what you or your child is best at and the best thing to do is to exploit that talent in order to get a scholarship.

One of the forms of grant that is often overlooked by the academically inclined is a cheerleading grant. If you can dance, if you are out-going and if you like showing off, you could get a cheerleading grant, even if you want to study pure or applied mathematics! Tangents off this variation are scholarships for gymnastics and track events.

There are four things to think about when seeking a cheerleading grant and they can all be made to begin with the letter ‘W’, so that they are easy to remember.

First find out WHO is in charge of cheerleading in your school and if they know where you can go to find out more information. If the coach in your school is not up to speed, go higher. Go over his or her head, otherwise you might miss out. If that does not work out, ask around for big local sports teams and write to the sports club directly.

When you have the relevant information about where the clubs are, find out WHAT they need from you. A good tactic would be to look at old games and practise the moves that the cheerleaders do in those games. Once you know the cheerleading moves from previous games, you will have shown an interest in the club.

Find out whether the fund that you are applying to has restrictions on WHERE you can be educated. Will you be constrained to the USA? If you want to study English in London, that will be a difficulty

Find out WHEN the application has to be sent in by. In other words, what are the deadlines.

There is a lot to do if you want a ‘free education’ no matter which way you try to get it. The point of this piece is to make you conscious of the fact that you do not have to only go down the route of applying for academic grants or even sports grants, things like cheerleading scholarships are also out there.

Child Safety Online

What is there to say about the world children inhabit these days? Sexed-up television, pornographic Internet sites and videos and violent board games. A world that is lowering its standards, values, and morals every day, surrounds our children.

What is even worse is that we cannot use Parental Controls any more to keep our children away from websites of an adult nature. Children nowadays are advanced in technology, and sometimes more so than their parents. How can we protect our children against online dangers? How can we as parents provide safety for our children, while battling the corruption going on worldwide?

Parental Controls are available on most types of Internet software, yet today, children are skilled at by-passing these Parental Controls. So, what can we do? We can protect our kids by monitoring their activities on the Internet closely.

How to use parental controls: It depends on which Internet provider you use, however, I will speak only of the Internet providers I know about, since all programs are different. To use AOL Parental Controls, you will have to go to Safety at the Toolbar and click on Parental Controls.

Once you arrive there, you will see a drop-down list of available usernames. Search for your child’s username and click on the username. You will see a popup window appear. Click on ‘Edit Web Control’ and then click ‘Kids Only’, and close. Now your child is protected against websites that hold potential dangers.

Chat rooms pose very serious dangers to children, since anyone can go into these rooms. Often predators frequent these areas, in order to draw children into their dangerous network. In the AOL browser, click on ‘Safety’ and then click on ‘Parental Controls’.

In the same way, click on the ‘Edit IM Controls’, ‘Edit E-mail Controls’, and ‘Edit Chat Control’ and follow the same steps as you did to establish the ‘Parental Controls’.

It is wise to install passwords. Passwords will offer additional protection and safety to your child. Do not give the child the passwords, because this will give the child control over the Internet connection, and the child might even reset the controls.

It is also a good idea to use your ‘Popup Controllers’ too, since if you do not turn on the controls, pop ups could carry a virus that could corrupt your computer or popup adult content, which your child will see if online. You can go into ‘AOL Safety’ at the toolbar to start these popup blockers.

If you use Internet Explorer; open a page. Click on ‘Tools’ at the top menu, then click ‘Popup Blocker’ and then click ‘Popup Blocker Settings’. Read the details carefully and set the program at medium. Medium is the norm and will block most pop ups. If you put the settings higher than medium, you could find it difficult to open websites for browsing.

Some of the dangers posed to children online include: Internet Porn; Child Porn; Child Sexual Abuse; Mobile Porn; and more. As you can see, your child is at serious risk, and if you want to master safety, you have to monitor, and take the steps to safeguard your child against online dangers.

According to recent studies, students have encountered sexual malpractices through webcams, instant messengers, and mobile phones. Further studies reveal that pornographic websites are making more profit than each of CBS, ABC, and NBC television channels in a year. The studies claim that the largest group that views porn sites are children. These children are between the ages of twelve and seventeen.

The results showed that about 74% of all the porn sites had unmonitored banners, while another 66% of the websites did not give adult content warnings. Furthermore, another 11% of the sites did not have ’sexually explicit content’ warnings and 25% boxed in their visitors by not letting them leave their websites. Only 3% of the websites out of more than 14 millions adult sites requested adult permission for minors. So, it is vital to protect your child now!

Best Way To Study

If you are amongst the many people who have taken a challenging class like anatomy or chemistry, you know how hard it is to study correctly. I took these classes as a sophomore in college. Back then it was hard to balance friends, school, and sports all together. It was easy for me to study for every other class except for anatomy. Luckily for me, my other roommates were in the class as well, and all studied a lot. One day we all thought it would be best to put all of your studying habits together to make this class way easier, and here is what we did.

One:

Working in groups Is key. Me and my roommates study together, and this is the best thing. If you have someone to verbally study with and bounce ideas off of then you will learn way faster. Also, if there is a study guide if you spread out the work amongst more people then you will be able to start the studying process much faster than having to fill out the study guide alone. The faster you know what is on the test, the faster you will be able to start studying.

Second:

Organization is key. This is very important when studying for classes such as chemistry, biology, or anatomy. Now that you have finished your study guide, you know what is on the test, and now can organize it into chapters. Take away the most important notes and try re-writing them. Writing down the notes over and over again will help you remember what you need to know much more accurately then just looking at your notes.

Three:

Know the pictures and diagrams. If you are in a class teaching you about cells of the human body it is so important to know where the function is going on. The best advice I can give you is to learn the pictures and diagrams, so then when you read through your notes you will know where everything is taking place.

Swimming Pool Safety For Children

Building a swimming pool in your house or garden can be a great way to have fun for yourself and indeed your whole family. It is also a great way to keep fit. However, in spite of that, it can also be very dangerous to your children about. If you can, you should wait until your kids are at least five years old or more until you put a swimming pool on your property. On the other hand, if you already have a swimming pool, there are ways that you can protect your kids.

One thing you should always remember is to never, ever, allow your children to be alone near your pool. Children tend to be attracted to water and all it takes is a slip for them to fall into the swimming pool. If you and your children are at your pool side and you have to leave the area for a second, you must always take your children with you.

To be completely safe, you should always make sure that you have loads of safety equipment around your pool at all times. Safety gear is a necessity to have on the poolside, as they could save the life of a child or in fact, anyone else who can’t swim.

You should invest in a shepherd’s crook too, as you can use it to pull someone out of the water. Having a phone at your pool is also a good investment, as you can easily ring for help in the event of an emergency.

If you don’t already have a fence around your pool you should think about getting one right away. A fence is a useful way to keep children away from your swimming pool. If you have a protective fence up, you don’t have to worry about little children falling into it, while you are away from the pool. When you put your fence up, you ought to always make sure that it’s at least six feet high with a locking gate. In this way, no one can get into the pool without a key, which you have to keep on you at all times.

You should learn CPR as well. Even though you hopefully will not ever need to use it. It is always great to know artificial respiration in the event of someone falling in your pool that is unable to swim. Whenever you have people you know can’t swim at your pool, you should always stay within reach of them, so you can react instantly if they fall in. A minute can be all it takes to save someone’s life.

Always bear in mind that a swimming pool is for having fun in, although you should always think in terms of safety first too. Once you have finished enjoying your pool for the day, ensure that you lock up the poolside well – and padlock the gate tight so no one can get in too.

What’s In A Dog’s Name?

Dog owners will explain that there is no given method for selecting a good name for a new dog or puppy. Whether they need to come up with girl or boy dog names, they will normally pick a name that sounds trendy or a name they like rather than putting some thought into what the name really means. Popular boy dog names have meanings, as do human names, so more often than not the meaning will not suit the dog it is given to. Here we give a guide to the top five boy dog names and what they actually mean.

In general, one of the first things you have to do when you get a new dog or puppy is pick a dog name for him or her. For most dog owners, this actually requires little thought. They just choose a dog name out of thin air and that is the name by which the poor animal will be known forever. However, there is something you ought to think about when going through dog names in order to make sure that you choose the right one.

First of all, dogs sense attitude and tone of voice better than humans are able to. If you pick a dog name for comic value or after someone you don’t like, your dog will know by your tone of voice that something is not right. The result could well be that, their attitude may change towards you or they may refuse to respond to your commands. Dogs’ names should mean something but should not hinder their mental development, so you ought to take your dog’s name seriously.

Although dogs are very intelligent animals, they can’t understand the same amount of information that we can. Therefore, dog names ought not be more than two syllables long. If they are more than that, most dogs will not respond. Max, Sam, Becky, Lady, Molly and the like are excellent dog names because they are short and the names are easily heard. They respond to these dog names and that will improve your chances of training them successfully.

However, dogs’ names ought to help them form a character of their own. Popular names don’t really help them to do that, so finding something simple but unusual can help their characters grow a lot without damaging their willingness to respond to a command.

Max: This is perhaps the greatest boy dog name and the meaning is surely the reason why most people pick it for their hound. It literally means “the best”. After all, every dog owner thinks that their dog is the best.

Jake: Jake is short for Jacob, which means “conqueror”. This is an apt boy dog name, if your puppy takes over the house within moments of setting foot inside it!

Buddy: Buddy is a familiarization of Budd, which means “messenger”. This boy dog name may be apt for a working dog or one you might train to bring in the newspaper of a morning. It is quite a popular boy dog name and can be very widely heard throughout America.

Bailey: The boy dog name Bailey is French and means “steward”. This is pretty suitable if your dog is responsible and sensible, so it is probably suitable for a Labrador or collie puppy, for example!

Sam: Sam apparently means “an answer to prayers”. This is a good boy dog name for sedate dogs that are easy to train and are very little work!

Very few people consult the meaning of names when choosing boy dog names, so instead of going with your first thought, it may be worth taking the time to choose a dog’s name that actually suits your dog. It costs nothing to spend a little time in thought about your dog’s name.

Keeping Your Dog Motivated

Keeping the attention of your dog while training is not always an easy task. Dogs are very easily distracted, and it is important to not allow the dog training sessions to be ruined by boredom. Making dog training fun for the dog and the human alike is essential to creating a happy, well-adjusted and well-trained dog.

You should provide random positive stimuli throughout the day in order to keep the attention of your dog. Doing things the dog like, like walking in the park, riding in the car, and playing with other dogs, are great ways to keep the dog’s attention, but you must reward him for small successes.

For instance, to reward the dog for coming to you when you call him, tell your dog to come to you, without giving any clues about going for a walk, a car ride, or other treats.

After the dog has come over to you and obediently sat down, attach the leash and begin the reward. This can be either the afore-mentioned walk in the park, ride in the car, or anything else the dog likes to do.

Giving some kind of reward, whether a treat, a special outing, or just a scratch behind the ears, every time the dog does something you want, is a good method to keep your dog’s motivation while you are dog training.

If the dog knows something good is going to happen every time he obeys your command, he will be more motivated to please you every time.

Distraction training.

When training any dog, it is vital to not let distractions ruin the training. The dog must be trained to ignore distractions, such as other people, other dogs, other animals and loud noises, and focus on what is being taught These types of distractions can also be used as rewards when training the dog to come when called.

For instance, if your dog enjoys playing with other dogs, whether in the local park or with the neighbour’s dogs, let him play freely with those other dogs. Then go into the park or garden and call your dog.

When he comes to you, give him lots of praise, treats and other rewards, then immediately let the dog to go back to playing with his friends. Do this several times and praise the dog each time he comes over to you.

The dog will soon learn that coming to you means good things (treats and praise) and not bad ones (being taken away from the park).

This so-called distraction training is one of the most difficult things for your dog to learn, because dogs are social animals by nature, and leaving the pack is one of the hardest things you can ask your dog to do. Most dogs will be understandably unwilling to leave their doggy companions, but it is important to persist in dog training.

Training the dog to come to you when you call may take some creativity on your part at first. For instance, waving a favourite toy, or a lure, is a good way to get your dog’s attention and put the focus back on you. If your dog has been clicker trained, a quick click can be a good motivator too, when training your dog.

Once your dog starts to become used to coming when called, you can begin to reduce and then stop the visual cues and focus on making the dog obey just your voice. It is important that the dog obeys voice commands alone, as you will not always have a toy or lure to hand.

Speed Reading – The Early Stages

Nobody actually knows when speed reading was first used, but it may well have been a long while ago. For centuries, reading was the privilege of a minority of the most highly-educated individuals in the world, the overwhelming majority of whom were monks and priests. This tiny, select group of men guarded their privilege and were loathe to instruct the general public to read. Moreover, throughout those hundreds of years there were relatively few books to read compared with nowadays. Books were also very expensive as they all had to be copied out by hand. Perhaps the only fact that has not altered is that the Bible was the most widespread book in existence and even now the Bible is the most prevalent book.

The world is fast devolving into a place where individuals are slowly but surely turning their backs on books and becoming fixed in front of monitors or television screens. In such a world, parents should not fail to notice the importance of developing a passion for reading in themselves and their children. Reading is a habit that should be established when the child is relatively young, so what can you do to foster this habit?

Well, there are a number of tactics you can employ, although one of the best to show the way by example. Read with your child every day, even if its only for 10-15 minutes. Permit your child to see you reading. By this I mean, don’t only read in bed before you go to sleep, but in place of watching television from time to time and read your children a bed-time story. Encourage them to read too. You could also:

Register your child for reading classes, if you really don’t have much time or your child is a little slow at reading. There are many well-structured after school reading classes that aim to make books more attractive to children. They help children with articulation, sayings and metaphors. These classes can be fun with animated characters and pictures, especially for young children,. They often make use of picture books, nursery rhymes, comical songs and short stories to fire up the imagination of younger children.

You will have to learn how to kindle your child’s interest. If your child has a favorite character, pick a series of books that include this character. Attempt to encourage your children to read real books not comics. The style in comics typically leaves a great deal to be desired with its slapdash English and street slang. As an alternative, go for series of books like Harry Potter or Tarzan.

You should build yourself a library of your own books. This may sound a little impressive, but after all, a library is only a collection of books. Begin with a good-looking bookshelf that you can easily add to. A skill like reading cannot be learned in only one place, so you cannot afford to leave all the difficult work to the day-school or even the after school curricula. You have to collect books that you think your child will like too. Use the Internet as a resource for learning about the modern reading games that will attract little children to the excellent and ancient art of reading,

Once you child is interested in reading for its own sake, you might read up on speed reading. Speed reading is best suited for educational revision and background reading. It’s greatly suited to cramming or studying for examinations. It is ideal for school and university. Nevertheless, the first job, before you can think about speed reading, is to get your child reading in the first place.

Are you interested in speed reading for yourself or a loved one? If so, please pop along to our web site focusing on Speed Reading.
