Many hunters like to get out on a Saturday afternoon in hunt for wild pheasant. Phasianus Colchicus is the scientific name of the common pheasant. Many hunters refer to it as simply pheasant or English pheasant.

Pheasants primarily live in wooded areas. Their diet is made up mostly of earthworms, snails, spiders, millipedes, and grasshoppers. These birds also like to eat on plenty of berries and grains out in the wild, especially blueberries. When they can locate sunflowers, they love them! At night, these gorgeous fowl will roost up in the trees and at daybreak they will peck the ground for some tasty treats.

Pheasants are also a phrase used for quail, ruffed grouse, or partridge. The ring-necked pheasant was introduced in North America in 1857 and has become well established in regions out West such as across the Rocky Mountains, Midwest, and the Great Plains. They have also populated areas of both Canada and Mexico. The male, known as the cock, has dazzling brown plumage with a green, purple marking with a white ring across the neck. Female pheasant plumage has a more subdued brownish look to it. The male and female pheasant has two things in common, they both have short rounded wings and very strong and stout beaks with a yellowish appearance. The male can have a tail over 20 inches long and it often has long sharp spurs that often protects it from other wild animals.

In some locations, pheasant populations have dropped somewhat due to environmental pressures such as land clearing and air pollution. In many regions in the United States pheasant farming seems to be a good solution for guaranteeing future generations. In the United States, pheasants populations have declined due to many factors. Farms allow for better managed populations.

The Great Plains has a huge population of pheasants that live in the open grass prairies and around the old farm houses. Pheasants enjoy pecking around grassy fields and often will bed down under old houses and around old farm equipment. The United Kingdom has a lot more pheasants than we do here in the United States. In the United States, it is estimated that there are about 10 million pheasants while in the UK there are approximately 35 million.

During the spring, the males will begin courting females by strutting. The head on the male will become bright red and engorged with.feathers puffed out as the male begins strutting in a courtship dance. Male birds will fight to the end to win the right to breed with a suitable female.

Male pheasants are known to commonly mate with more than one female and, kind of like Elvis, are often followed that one time by a group of females! This is called polyamorous behavior. When the females lay their eggs they will do it in a nest of about 10 eggs. The eggs will be incubated by 23 to 26 days before hatching. Usually this occurs in the late spring and early summer starting in April through June.
