The Ancient History Of Archery

Bowmen have played a major role in warfare and hunting for thousands of years. Primitive bows were made of a single piece of wood, but composite recurve bows were being made from Greece to China as far back as the second millennium BC.

Recurve bows, those with the ends facing the ‘wrong way’ when unstrung, are more powerful inch for inch in length than one piece wooden bows, which made them more suitable to confined conditions such as on horseback, in a chariot or in woodlands.

Bits of composite recurve bows, usually made from horn, have been discovered in many parts of the world. Early arrows were made from naturally straight twigs or pine needles with napped flint tips affixed. Wooden bows did not preserve so well and exemplars are rare.

It appears that archery was being developed in the early Mesolithic or late Paleolithic Age. Archery was particularly well developed in some Islamic countries and in Asia, where Zen Buddhist monks utilized archery as an element of their meditation techniques.

In the first days of archery, there were mixed feelings about bowmen. In those days, people battled hand to hand with swords and spears and some of the traditionalists reckoned that archers were cowards because they attacked from a distance out of immediate danger. This point is made quite clear in ‘The Iliad’, Homer’s account to the siege of Troy.

There are or were many types of bows made to suit different fighting or hunting requirements. Some varieties of bow are the; long bow, short bow, recurve bow, composite recurve bow, reflex bow, decurve bow, deflex bow and crossbow among others.

The longbow was extremely hard to learn to use and the archer had to have considerable upper-body strength. The bow was often six feet long with a weighty three foot long arrow. The draw weight for utmost power was about a hundred pounds and the use of the bow on a battleground was as long-range artillery.

The heavy arrows and vicious armour-piercing arrow head would rain down on the enemy from a hundred yards or more and penetrate shields and armour as if they did not exist. Shot horizontally, the three-foot arrow could pass through a couple of people.

In fact, the longbow was so essential to the triumph of Great Britain that a law was passed making it compulsory for men over a particular age to practice with their longbows every Sunday on the village green in order to develop the required expertise and upper-body strength in case war came.

The arrows are made to go with the different kinds of bows and the different bows and their specific arrows are suited to different kinds of hunting – whether you are hunting men or animals.

There are essentially two styles of shooting: instinctive shooting, which is very demanding as the archer does not take his eyes off the target, but does not sight down the arrow; and sight shooting where the archer makes use of sights to align the arrow with its target. The majority of people find sight shooting simpler.

Some Interesting Facts About Archery

People have been practicing archery for a minimum of four thousand years, but almost certainly for a lot longer than that. Parts of composite recurve bows have been found dating back to the second millennium BC, but the parts that were found were the non-wooden, composite parts, typically of horn.

The wooden parts usually rotted away thousands of years previously, but a wooden longbow from the same era was discovered in Somerset. Presumably, people had been using all wooden, single section bows long before they started constructing complex composite recurve bows.

The skill of archery has always enthralled mankind and, despite the fact that guns have made archery obsolete, it still fascinates people today, although nowadays archery is almost reserved used for sporting purposes. It is a flourishing sport and hobby and is the national sport of the Kingdom of Bhutan.

If you are interested in taking up archery, you will first have to decide which kind of bow you prefer. Among other varieties, there are the longbow, recurve bow, reflex and decurve bows, deflex bow, pyramid bow and crossbow.

To a certain extent, the arrows are not interchangeable either. For instance, a longbow can cast a three foot, heavy-gauge arrow, whereas a crossbow shoots a six inch bolt. The bows also had distinctive uses although there was a certain degree of overlap.

For example, longbows were the heavy, rapid-firing armaments of their day, being able to fling a heavy, armour-piercing arrow hundreds of yards; whereas a short recurve bow was perfect for attack from horseback. Crossbows took less skill to use but were slower than a bow.

There are different types of arrow as well. Historically, arrows were made of wood with a pointed metal tip, but these days arrows can be made of aluminium or carbon fibre. The arrowheads are distinctive for different applications as well. A plain brass tip is sufficient for everyday shooting whereas a vicious, slashing broadhead is used for killing.

The majority of people who take archery seriously use carbon fibre arrows these days which is the standard arrow shaft used at the Olympic games. The flights are usually of bird feathers and are used to stabilize the arrow in flight to reduce wobble. Plastic flights are also available as they are less prone to damage.

The Welsh (and English) longbow was perhaps the most powerful hand bow extensively used. These longbows were typically six feet or more in length and made of one section of seasoned yew (or other woods). The draw weight of a Welsh longbow at the time of Henry VIII was between 160 -180 lbf and that would shoot a heavy three ounce arrow up to about 280 yards.

An explanation of the damage that one of these arrows could wreak was given by Gerald of Wales in the 12th century:

“… in the war against the Welsh, one of the men of arms was struck by an arrow shot at him by a Welshman. It went right through his thigh, high up, where it was protected inside and outside the leg by his iron cuirasses, and then through the skirt of his leather tunic; next it penetrated that part of the saddle which is called the alva or seat; and finally it lodged in his horse, driving so deep that it killed the animal”.

It took years of practice to draw and shoot one of these longbows bows accurately.

Hybrid Electric Engines: Some Information

Have you ever wondered about hybrid cars? They certainly look stylish and modern, but what is it about them that makes them so different and so special? After all, most cars look the same these days, do they not? They are all designed by computer to be aerodynamic and aerodynamic is aerodynamic, so they all end up looking indistinguishable to anyone who is not an aficionado.

Well, the fact is that the difference between a hybrid car and a standard car lies under the bonnet. There are different types of hybrid vehicles as well, but the most widespread kind has a hybrid electric engine. Therefore, you could say that what makes hybrid cars different from most other, ordinary cars is their engine.

Or engines really, because hybrid electric cars basically have two engines. One, the internal combustion engine, runs on petrol, LPG or diesel and the other, the electric motor, runs off electricity stored in an array of powerful batteries. On the other hand, ordinary cars only have an internal combustion engine. It is a good idea to examine these two types of engine separately.

First of all the electric motor. Electrical energy is generated by several components on the car and stored in a large bank or array of heavy-duty batteries. The electricity is created by the turning of the internal combustion engine, just as with a standard car, when it is in use, but also by the wheels or / and the car’s braking system. Different models have different methods of creating this electricity, but they are all very hi-tech and very effective.

When the car’s internal computers decide that the car no longer needs the strength of the internal combustion engine, it will turn it off and switch to the electric motor instead. The conditions where this might happen are, for example, when you are driving slowly in inner-city traffic, when you are cruising at moderate speed on a flat road or when you are going down hill. This saves a considerable amount of fuel, which is clearly a great saving to you.

However, there are times when you need more power than the batteries can supply you, for instance, when accelerating hard, when overtaking or when climbing a hill. At times such as these, the electric motor will close down and the combustion engine will take over and start supplying power to the accelerator and electricity to the batteries. When the need for extra power has ceased, the batteries will take over again.

These choices are all taken by the hybrid electric vehicle’s (HEV’s) on board computer system and you will not be aware of much other that a rush of power or a quietening of the propulsion system. This works very well in most cases, but some drivers of HEV’s would like to have a manual override for unusual circumstances, such as an undulating terrain.

All in all, cars with hybrid electric engines work very well at reducing fuel bills but they are still too dear to be much more than a gimmicky toy and a salve to the conscience for the well-to-do.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece writes on a lot of topics, but is at present concerned with hybrid electric engines. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at New Hybrid Vehicles.

Calendars – Why They Can Be Out

Thousands of years ago, ancient Greek astronomers determined that the direction of the Earth’s axis is continually, even if in a very slow way, changing in a uniform pattern. The variation is very similar to the way a spinning top slowly leans one way and then another as it slows down. It is a wobble that happens as its axis changes direction.

This odd movement of the planet is due to a couple of factors, the most important of which is something called ‘precession’. Precession arises from the fact that the Earth is not a perfect sphere. It is in fact about twenty-seven miles longer around the Equator that it is around the Poles. The Earth then is oblate, or fat around the middle like middle-aged spread, but it is due to the rotation not to its age.

If you picture the Earth with its Poles off centre. Then rotate that image and you will find that any point, except the very centre of the axis, will travel in a circle. But very, very gradually. So slowly that it takes 26,000 years to go full circle and get back to where it started from.

This point then, any point you choose, is very gradually shifting its location in relation to the stars because the axis is gyrating too. The result of this is that, what we call the North Star (formally known as Polaris, which is in fact one degree off true North) will not be over our North Pole one day. In fact, by about 15,000 AD, Vega will be almost above the North Pole, although it will be about four degrees off true North. But even this will not endure, and by 28,000 AD, Polaris will be back above where it is nowadays.

One of the effects of the precession is that seasons vary. They modify the dates that they take place, so that Summer could come earlier or later. The amazing thing about our calendar is that it is corrected for that (with the leap year). If it were not, the vernal or Spring equinox would shift over 13,000 years from March 21st to September 21st., which is the date of the autumnal equinox, precisely half a year later.

It is for this reason that the precession of the Earth is generally referred to as the “Precession of the Equinoxes”. Although the precession of the equinoxes is very lengthy, it can be readily observed. The correct year of 325.25 days is the length of time from one vernal equinox to the next vernal equinox, however, it takes 20 minutes and 24 seconds longer for the Sun to appear in exactly the same position in relation to the stars behind it over the same period. It is for this reason that accurate star maps have to be stamped with the exact time and date to which they relate.

Calendars And How To Appreciate Them

The calendar is such a routine, everyday thing, but how much do you actually know about the operation of it. Why is it like that?

A DAY: The Earth rotates at a reasonably fixed pace about the imaginary line running between the North and South Poles named the Earth’s Axis. The time it takes to spin once is called a ‘rotation’ and this takes just under twenty-four hours. Nevertheless, because the Earth is constantly traveling around the Sun, the exact time from noon one day to noon the next is 3 minutes 56 seconds longer and this makes a day almost exactly twenty-four hours in length.

The actual time from noon to noon differs depending where the Earth is on its celestial path around the Sun, but if you average the days in a year out, it comes to precisely twenty-four hours.

A YEAR: All nine planets in our solar system move around the Sun in approximately perfectly circular routes called orbits. Each trip around the Sun is called a revolution and all the planets orbit around the Sun in the same direction. The course the Earth takes can be verified by noting its location against the background stars.

In view of the fact that you cannot see the Sun and the stars at the same time, it is necessary to note the position of the Sun in the morning and the see which stars appear there in the night. You will see that the Sun seems to pass through the twelve constellations of the zodiac during a year.

Earth’s trip around the Sun, which seems like the Sun traveling through the zodiac takes about 365.25 days. This is different from year to year, so astronomers add or delete a second in some years to keep their time correct with the Earth’s motion.

THE SEASONS: The seasons indicate the variation in the pattern of daylight over the course of a year. Because the Earth is tilted off centre, different parts of it get different amounts of sunlight on different stages of its path around the Sun, a path that we call a year. So, between about the 21st September and late March, the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, which creates Autumn and Winter, giving less than twelve hours of daylight per day.

From April to the 20th September, the Northern Hemisphere enjoys more than twelve hours of daylight a day, producing Spring and Summer. The exact opposite occurs in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Equinoxes occur at the points in the year when there is exactly twelve hours of sunlight and darkness in the day. So, the vernal or Spring equinox is on or around the 21st March and the autumnal equinox is on or around the 21st September. Summer officially begins on the day with the greatest amount of daylight, the 21st June or summer solstice.

The winter solstice occurs on the shortest day, the 21st December. ‘Solstice’ is a combination of two words meaning ’sun standing still’ and the days are so called because they are the days when the apparent movement of the Sun reaches its extremes and reverses direction again.

Pheasants are located worldwide and have many different different shades. You will find all kinds of looks from the white-eared pheasant to the reddish colored Blood pheasant, and everything else you can think of. Habitat is eventually the most crucial thing in the success of the pheasant. Specific habitats tend to be more protective of pheasants and their eggs compared to other places, and it inhibits being fed upon. The wildcat is the most dangerous predator to the wild pheasant. It can leap off the ground and pull one out of the sky at enormous speed and be eating lunch within seconds. In areas which have raccoons and snakes, the eggs will be in possible danger likewise.

In the United States, the growth of pheasant farms has increased steadily from year to year as demand for wild habitats grow more in demand. The farms will raise the young birds till they are big enough to release into the habitat, insuring a strong population for hunting.

A good bird dog will help you find, scare, and retrieve your bird after a successful hunt. It is a fairly wide consensus that Labrador retriever’s make the best pheasant hunting dogs. They are very good at finding birds and retrieving the ones that are downed by birdshot. Some hunters prefer pointers for flushing out and locating shot birds.

Water is a commonplace to find pheasants during the hot times of the summer. This can be a good way to make sure that the local population is strong. Water is a vital element to all wildlife not just birds. Just like fishing and other hunts you can expect great hunting early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The morning seems to the best time to hunt as pheasant tend to be feeding in the open fields.

If you see birds moving around a lot, it is usually best to wait till they settle down to begin hunting. When you and your dog first arrive, there will be a lot more action on part of the pheasants to move and find shelter. Just hold still and wait for things to calm down. It is important that you have tracking skills and have scouted the area prior to going hunting. On pheasant farms, this is not a concern as many of the birds have been released within hours of your arrival.

Losing Weight Fast

Apart from physical appearance, weight affects a person in various ways. This could be the overall quality of life, self-confidence, depression, health risks, and physical incapabilities. There are a lot of advantages to losing weight. It is for this reason that a lot of people are searching for a weight loss program that will trim down those excess pounds and get a beautiful, jaw-dropping body.

First of all, an overweight individual ought to do is find a doctor to provide the best weight loss program for you. This will only be done after a complete physical examination, which then to the recommendation of a proper weight loss plan. To lose excess weight fast and effectively, four aspects of your life should be altered: what to eat, how to eat, behaviour and amount of exercise.

Here are a few fast recommendations that can change an over-weight person’s whole life:

1: Quick weight loss is achieved by a multi-faceted technique that is made up of mindset, exercise, and, in some cases, dietary supplements. Commence by following a food regimen that can be easily adopted into your current way of life. Choose an exercise plan that includes at least fifteen minutes a day brisk walking, running, swimming and/or dancing.

2: Set yourself realistic targets. The ability to focus and have a proper mindset allows a person on a diet to quickly shed those extra kilos. You have to develop discipline and a proper mind set, a dieter will never get disheartened and pack the diet in

3: Listen to what your body is saying. everyone’s metabolism reacts in a different way to the various fast weight loss programs. Try substituting one program for another to gauge the body’s reaction. The exercise regimen must be suited to one’s body, as some are not able to exercise as strenuously as others. If walking is all that you can do, then walk, for this is one of the best exercises. Remember that muscles burn calories so it’s definitely a good idea to put on a little more muscle – it looks sexy too.

4: Eat more fibre since it makes a person feel full sooner and stays in the stomach longer, slowing down the rate at which you will want to eat again. For example whole grain bread will remain in the system longer and stave off hunger longer than white bread, which converts to sugars faster. giving you a quick sugar spike, which soon passes, leaving you hungry again.

5: Keep away from fried food especially deep-fried, as it contains a large amount of fat. But remember, although fish and chicken are considered to be much leaner than beef, these white meats can retain even more fat than beef if it is fried. It is advisable those on a strict diet choose grilled food, since it does not have much fat after the food has been prepared.

6: Drink plenty of fluid. Drinking at least six to eight glasses of water a day keeps the body ‘flushing’ and because weight loss depends on how the body gets rid of bodily waste, the body must stay hydrated.

So, all in all, discipline and consistent application is still the way to quick weight loss. Light dieting, workout, and the right amount of nutritional supplements performed in regularly everyday will result in a quicker weight loss than having a massive, but short-lived campaign that is followed by a return to your bad old ways, as this only leads to adding more weight than before the diet was started.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with our blog why can’t I lose weight?
