Worms, Fleas And Ticks On Dogs

You have to get rid of heart worm, fleas and other parasites in dogs whenever they raise their ugly heads by using the appropriate medication on them. Many products have come onto the market to protect dogs from heart worms, fleas and other parasites like hook worms, whip worms, round worms, lice, ticks etc.

Of the heart worms, fleas and other parasites, fleas can produce a hyper sensitive reaction in the affected animal. Animals infected with fleas scratch their skin very vigorously. Frequently the scratching is so severe that the skin becomes super-sensitive and dermatitis is the result in the scratched areas.

The result is often that the animal can not lie down for long or sleep comfortably due to the constant bites by the fleas. So, your dog looks as if has some severe skin disease. If the the animal is not properly attended to for these flea bites, there will often be secondary bacterial invasions in these areas and there may even be a bad smell coming from your dog’s affected skin.

You need to observe your pet closely in order prevent a serious infestation. It is essential to prevent such an outbreak as they are extremely distressing to dogs. Similarly, the skin of the animal needs to be checked regularly for the presence of ticks and lice. In order to do this properly, you need to look at the dog’s skin by separating the dog’s hairs. The easiest way to do this is by slowly back-combing or ruffling the dog’s hair.

Often, if your pet is anaemic, and he is not infested with fleas, you need to rule out hookworm. Symptoms of hookworm are anaemia, loose stools and a pot belly. The dog’s owner may recognize these symptoms themselves, however, to be honest, the dog needs to undergo a routine health check at the vet’s involving faecal and hematological examinations.

There are many commercial products available on the market, some of which are effective for dealing with all these conditions in a single dose. Drugs like ivermectin are highly efficacious and are obtainable in injection, oral and solution forms. The latter should be put directly on the dog’s skin. These drugs can induce the prevention of the above conditions too.

Therefore, the best policy to adopt is to keep a keen watch on your dog. This could very easily be carried out at bath time and when you are brushing him. You can use an anti-flea and anti-tick shampoo, which will keep these pests at bay, if used as stated on the bottle. Couple this with regular grooming with a lice comb and the use of a flea collar should keep your pet flea, lice, and tick free.

Are there Sexual Headaches?

Orgasm is supposed to be a pleasurable and happy activity for most people, but it can be painful for others who discover that it starts coital headaches. For these people, sexual activity of any type can result in coital headache attacks.

Technically, a headache, or cephalalgia, is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes the neck too. They can be classified into two main groups: primary or idiopathic, and symptomatic, although there are other ways of classifying them too; for example by severity.

Basically, primary headaches have a known or unknown reason, whereas symptomatic headaches are usually caused by a previous trauma. Primary headaches include amongst others: migraine, tension headaches, cluster headaches and coital headaches.

Coital headaches, also called coital cephalalgia or sexual headaches, is a rare, but painful type of headache that starts in the nape of the neck during sexual intercourse, but before climax. It can occur in all conditions where climax is the expected result. The pain can move to behind the eyes and can then be even more severe. Typically the pain will last from a few minutes to an hour or so, but it has been known to last for days in the worst cases.

It is surprising to many to discover that men are three times more likely to experience coital headaches than women and the age groups most at risk are those between 20 and 25 and 30 and 44. Doctors do not really understands why this should be. Coital headaches affect about one percent of the population, although this number could be much higher due to people being embarrassed to discuss it.

Moreover, coital headaches are benign, which means that they cause no long-term adverse consequences, as far as doctors know. It appears that people taking sexual stimulants, like Viagara, are roughly 10% more prone to a coital headache. In deed, besides the obvious, temporary pain, the worst effects of coital headaches are differing degrees of dizziness, confusion and stiffness of neck.

However, it is still worth while visiting a doctor though, especially in the beginning, just to rule out the more serious causes of headaches, such as brain tumours and blood clots. However, the doctor can do very little to help by way of treatment. He could recommend a complete abstention from any kind of sexual activity for a period varying from days to weeks or he may recommend trying taking medication a short time before sexual activity begins.

Some of the headache medications that may be taken are indomethacin, imitrex, zomig and propranolol, although if the headaches persist, your doctor may recommend daily preventive medication. People suffering from frequent coital headaches may obtain a positive response to migraine preventive medications, such as beta blockers or verapamil. Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen may similarly be helpful. Coital headaches and migraines are also more likely to occur if a person is in poor physical shape.

However, the treatment for coital headaches for a lot of people can be as simple as bringing your weight up or down to the normal weight for your size. Coital headaches can also be cured in some sufferers by an increased level of exercise, although this could bring on exertion headaches in a few cases.

The good news is though that most headaches related to sex are not serious in nature. In deed, various studies actually suggest that orgasm can relieve headaches and migraine in some cases. This means that for some adults, refusing sex may actually be the reason that delays headache treatment.

Acupuncture Can Help Treat Headaches

Acupuncture can help treat headaches. This was found after a comparative study was done with typical medical therapy. In a number of cases, it even stops it from taking place which helps improve the standard of life for the patient. To realize how acupuncture helps headache sufferers, you have got to understand that in conventional Chinese medication, it is thought that a disequilibrium in the flow of blood and energy causes this to occur.

To treat it, the consultant must relieve the stress by inserting needles into the body to boost the blood flow to the brain so reducing the discomfort experienced in an attack. The needles used helps the body balance the serotonin levels since it’s a neurotransmitter that has an effect on veins and has a role to play in headaches. In reality the more frequent these sessions are the better. It may even come to a point where the categorical contact point is no longer required but the general kick itself.

The end result of undergoing acupuncture is amazing. If you experience 15 to 20 days of agonizing pain, this may be count down to only 8 days. You won’t even need to use that much medication anymore as before. For those who are working, this is good so that they are not absent from work that much and there won’t be that much deductions in their salary.

But how well acupuncture does for one patient may vary with another. This depends on the condition of the attack and the individual. The best part about acupuncture is that there are no side effects and it is painless. Skillful professionals can do this so you don’t suffer from hematoma or pneumothorax. Another disease is potentially dangerous is HIV or hepatitis which can be prevented of course as long as the needles used are properly sterilized. It will be much better if the person uses disposable needles.

Acupuncture has been practiced in the US for over two decades. Although tests have shown how effective it can be to treat persistent conditions and certain obsessions, more studies must be done to see where else it can be helpful. Though one test has demonstrated that acupuncture can help headaches, other tests will also need to be done to prove if this is correct. Till the point that other results are published, patients must depend on typical medication that’s prescribed by a doctor.

But you don’t have to attend for the results to come out. If you suspect it is worth a try, go for it. Just ask for a referral from your GP as there are several practitioners who have accepted the confirmed fact that alternative kinds of medicine can also help a patient. You can also find someone on the web. You may be certain they are certificated if they are recognized by the state’s Validation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

Apart from that, you have to also make some life changes as there are trigger factors that’ve been famous for causing headaches. Stress is number one on the list so you get enough rest and exercise as well as a healthful diet. Patients that suffer from headache should also check if acupuncture is covered by their HMO. Most insurance providers and HMO’s today cover part of the pricetag but there are restrictions so you check what’s covered by your policy.

The Treatment of Headaches

While we are suffering from a headache it is natural to think of ways to stop the pain. However, as there are different types of headaches, sometimes the treatments may work for only a few headache types. There are two different ways of curing the pain caused by headaches. These types of headache treatment are called prophylactical and abortive headache treatment.

The prophylactic type of treatment has to be taken everyday in order to reduce the frequency of and to control the pain of the headache. Abortive headache treatment is started only when the headache starts.

However, you should realize that your physician will not prescribe any prophylactic headache treatment unless you are suffering from several, frequent headache attacks per month. Furthermore, when you take the prophylactic medication you will be checked for side effects like weight gain, water retention, lethargy, memory impairment and hallucinations.

The treatment of headaches with prophylactic medication begins with a low dosage. The dosage is then increased monthly. You will also be checked every month or so to find out if the treatment is effective. Your doctor will also make sure that you are not on any other types of medication or vitamin supplements during this early phase of your headache treatment.

It is very important to know whether the patient is or becomes pregnant. If you do become pregnant, then your doctor should be informed so that tests can be carried out to discover any possible effects to the foetus.

The primary prescription drugs given for the treatment of headaches are beta blockers like Tenormin and Lopressor. Calcium channel blockers like Cardizem, Dilacor, and Procardia are also used. Doctors can also prescribe anti-depressants such as Elavil and Zoloft. You may also be prescribed Serotonin Antagonists like Sansert.

Furthermore, anti-convulsants such as Tegretol, Depakote, and Dilantin are also given for headache treatment. Cafergot and Sansert, which are ergot derivatives, may also be prescribed by your doctor. The abortive headache treatment available for your headache pain is generally the ‘over the counter’ (OTC) type. These include Paracetamol, Aspirin, Tylenol, Panadol, Motrin, and Advil to name but a few. Tylenol and Panadol are known as Acetaminophen drugs. Motrin and Advil belong to the group of drugs that are known as Ibuprofen.

Besides these headache medicines there are non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs or NSAID’s. The side effects of NSAIDs like Naprosyn and Meclomen include nausea, gastrointestinal pain, dizziness, diarrhea, light-headedness and constipation. These headache medications can also cause the side-effect of a different form of headache in some people.

Since these drugs can cause other problems, you should consult your doctor in order to find out if they are suitable for you or not. People who prefer an ‘alternative’ headache treatment should ask their doctor whether he thinks the alternative medicine, such as aromatherapy, will work.

Fleas, Ticks and Worms

Fleas and other parasites ought to always be given the highest priority by dog owners. Flea bite allergy in dogs is all too common and causes worry to many dog owners every year, especially in the summer, although all year round if your dog lives indoors with central heating. This is because flea bites often produce allergic reactions in the area bitten by the fleas, which is very often on the back just above the tail. In these cases, the affected area becomes red and bald due to the dog’s continuous scratching of itself.

Heavy flea infestations can cause severe dermatitis in dogs. If the flea bites cause an allergic reaction or even dermatitis in your dog, he/she really ought to be taken to the veterinary doctor, because mostly, the dog will be suffering extreme discomfort by now.

The vet will provide you a cream to ease the itching and reduce the inflammation and some powder or a spray to kill the fleas. Prevention, however, is better than cure and medicated collars are available to treat and prevent an infestation of external blood-suckers like ticks and fleas.

Besides fleas, other parasites like ticks and lice in addition to the internal parasites like hook worms, round worms, whip worms etc. can affect the health of your dog. For instance, if hookworm infects a dog, that dog will usually suffer from anaemia. The signs of anaemia become more evident depending on the degree of infection by the hookworm.

Hookworm larvae will pass directly through the skin and cause severe problems inside the infected dog. Such dogs may show lesions on the paws and on the skin due to dermatitis. Frequently, skin rashes result in such cases and the affected animal may also pass runny stools, which are tinged red with blood.

Most dogs and all puppies get round worms, which is why dogs can sometimes be seen rubbing their bottoms along the floor. However, if round worms are present in very large numbers, infected puppies show a pot belly, which is easily noticeable by the dog’s owners themselves. A dose of piperazine salts can be given orally for the cure of this condition. However, broad-spectrum anthelmintics like pyrantel pamoate, fenbendazole etc. are also used to cure this very common condition.

Lately, many drugs have come onto the market to treat fleas and other parasites. Nowadays, the medical agent called ivermectin is highly preferred by many dog owners to treat fleas and other parasites in dogs. This drug is available in injection form and oral form. The drug is available for external application also.
