Barry, South Wales: Ancient History: Part 2

In the 1700’s, dishes, saws, knives, flints, a scraper, a prehistoric horn celt with strange markings, a spokeshave and some arrowheads from the Neolithic Period were found. These are now safely housed in the museum in Cardiff, but at the time no one thought to organize an excavation and later a housing estate was built on the site.

They also found an ancient Roman kitchen complete with utensils and food remains which appeared to have been abandoned in a hurry like the Marie Celeste. That wasn’t investigated either. In 1533, the King’s Antiquary, Leland, was told to tour all places where records were held. It took him nine years and his description of the island was as follows:

“It is about a mile in circumference and has good corn, grass and some wood, and there is no dwelling on the Island, but in the midst of it is a fair little Chapel of St. Baruch which is visited by many pilgrims. It took the name Barri from this holy man who was buried there and whose remains are yet on the Island”. (The Welsh name for Barry is Y Barri).

Viking raiders attacked the south Wales coastline, often taking hostages from monasteries in the 10th. Century, but they did not try to settle in the area. The island was long known as the Saints Retreat or the Island of Saints. Later, in the early 16th. Century, the island was used by smugglers and pirates and was nicknamed the Smugglers Fortress. This coincided with the increase in shipping to and from Bristol, Britain’s second biggest port at the time.

The island soon became the centre for smuggling and piracy in the Bristol Channel. In 1784, Barry Island became known as ‘The Fortress of Knight’. Kight was the most frequent and feared pirate in the channel but people were too afraid to speak out against him. He was also a local celebrity. His ship was armed and named ‘John O’ Combe’. The navy eventually routed him and he moved down to Lundy Island, which he also turned into a fortress. However, he and his successor, Arthur, went back to Barry so often that Customs requested the government to send a cutter to Penarth and 60 soldiers to Barry on permanent duty.

The small seaside village of Rhoose, five miles from Barry, was so well-known for its wreckers that George II sent troops to break up them up. They landed at Aberthaw, just up the coast a bit further, “the Rhoose men’s favourite landing zone, from where they could easily transport the contraband along Port Road to Cardiff, the main market for such things”. While digging out for the docks at Barry in the late nineteenth century, several large caves were filled in. They had probably been used by the pirates who were moved on in about 1850.

UK IT Training Courses Revealed

CompTIA A + has a total of four exams and areas of study, but your only requirement is to get certified in 2 to be thought of as qualified. Because of this, many educational establishments simply offer two. But giving you all four options will help you to build a more confident perspective of your subject, which you’ll come to realise is an important asset in the commercial world.

In addition to learning how to build PC’s and fix them, students involved in this training will be taught how to operate in antistatic conditions, along with remote access, fault finding and diagnostics.

You may also want to consider doing Network+ as it will enable you to work with networks, which is where the bigger salaries are.

Quite often, students have issues with a single training area which is often not even considered: The breakdown of the course materials before being couriered to your address.

The majority of training companies will set up a 2 or 3 year study programme, and deliver each piece one-by-one as you get to the end of each exam. Sounds reasonable? Well consider these facts:

How would they react if you didn’t complete each and every module within the time limits imposed? And maybe you’ll find their order of completion doesn’t come as naturally as an alternative path could be.

To be straight, the best solution is to get an idea of what they recommend as an ideal study order, but get everything up-front. It’s then all yours should you not complete it within their ideal time-table.

There are colossal changes washing over technology over the next generation – and this means greater innovations all the time.

We’re only just starting to understand how all this will mould and change our lives. The way we correlate with the world as a whole will be profoundly affected by computers and the web.

A average IT employee in Great Britain can demonstrate that they get significantly more than fellow workers in other market sectors. Average salaries are amongst the highest in the country.

Excitingly, there is a lot more room for IT jobs development in Great Britain as a whole. The market sector continues to develop quickly, and as we have a significant shortage of skilled professionals, it’s highly unlikely that there’ll be any kind of easing off for quite some time to come.

Many people question why qualifications from colleges and universities are now falling behind more commercial certifications?

Corporate based study (in industry terminology) is most often much more specialised. Industry is aware that such specialised knowledge is necessary to handle an increasingly more technical marketplace. CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA dominate in this arena.

Academic courses, as a example, can often get caught up in too much loosely associated study – and a syllabus that’s too generalised. Students are then held back from getting enough specific knowledge about the core essentials.

It’s a bit like the TV advert: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. The company just needs to know what they’re looking for, and then request applicants with the correct exam numbers. They’ll know then that all applicants can do what they need.

Charging for examination fees as an inclusive element of the package price and offering an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is a popular marketing tool with a good many training companies. But look at the facts:

It’s become essential these days that we have to be a little more ‘marketing-savvy’ – and usually we know that for sure it is something we’re paying for – it’s not because they’re so generous they want to give something away!

For those who want to qualify first ‘go’, then the most successful route is to fund each exam as you take it, focus on it intently and apply yourself as required.

Does it really add up to pay the college early for exams? Find the best exam deal or offer when you’re ready, don’t pay mark-ups – and sit exams more locally – rather than in some remote place.

Why borrow the money or pay in advance (plus interest of course) on examinations when you didn’t need to? Big margins are made by companies getting paid upfront for exams – and then hoping that you won’t take them all.

Additionally, exam guarantees often have very little value. The majority of organisations won’t be prepared to pay for re-takes until you can prove to them you’re ready to pass.

On average, exams cost 112 pounds or thereabouts last year via UK VUE or Prometric centres. Therefore, why splash out often many hundreds of pounds extra to have ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when it’s no secret that the most successful method is a regular, committed, study programme, with an accredited exam preparation system.

How Do Dogs Communicate?

Dogs are just about the most intelligent of household pets. If you take the time to look, you will see that they have the ability to communicate with humans, other dogs and even other species. They do this with body language and voice. Their signs are made with the their eyes, ears, eyebrows, head, mouth and tail.

Their voice is clearly not the same as ours, but they use pitch in their barks, whines, whimpers, pants, growls and howls and their gestures are made with their entire body and every element of it.

You can always tell a confident and therefore higher ranking dog, because they hold their tails aloft. Dogs, like all other animals, including we humans, have an innate sense or their place in society. This is because dogs evolved in packs in the wild, just as we evolved in villages. which is why they integrate well into our human society.

There is a pecking order within their group, as within human society. The subservient dogs submit themselves to the stronger dogs, which is why dogs lower their tail when they feel unsure of themselves. When dogs fight for dominance, the fur on their tails stands up and they have this trait in common with other animals. They do it to show that they are being serious in front of their adversary.

A dog that is unsure what to do will wag its tail slowly. A bit like you or I might give a weak smile, unsure whether to smile openly or glower. They are in a process of working out whether they should recognize the status quo or fight. Excited dogs wag their tails very fast and if the dog’s hip moves along with the tail, it means that the dog is in submissive mode to a higher ranker. A pet should do that to its owner, as you have become the leader of its surrogate pack.

When dogs become aggressive they show their teeth, the same as humans. If all of the teeth are visible, it indicates that the dog is prepared to bite or attack. We do the same unconsciously. People often bare their teeth and snarl insults, before a fight. However, they also show teeth when they smile but this is an indication of compliance, again as we do – submissiveness here meaning a recognition that a fight is superfluous.

With a dog, the number of teeth on display differentiates between a smile and a snarl. In a smile, a dog only shows the front teeth, but in a snarl the dog reveals all his teeth and gums and makes an aggressive noise.

Ears are a good indication of the dog’s level of attention. When the ears are erect and forward facing, it means that the dog is concentrating. But if the dog is stress-free, its ears will lie flat. However, some breeds do not have as much control over their ears.

Dogs bark to protect their territory, which comes to mean their boss’ territory, which should signify your property. However, barking is their usual language so you will have to learn the difference between friendly play barking and aggression in your dog. It is pretty apparent though.

Observation of your pet is the key, because, although all dogs are the same as in all humans are the same, there are minor differences. They are not difficult to learn, just spend some time with you dog and keep your mind open and it will become very apparent to you.

The Ancient History of Barry, South Wales: Part One

Much of what we know or have supposed about Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan, in which it is situated has been gleaned from the buildings found there, many of which have been badly neglected for too long. There are also legendary stories, such as that of Joseph of Arimathea, who traded tin in Glastonbury, just across the channel and who was one of the first missionaries to this part of the country.

Tradition has it that the father of Caractacus took his son on a journey to Rome, where they were converted to Christianity. Later, they returned to the Vale of Glamorgan with Bran The Blessed, the missionary. It is a fact that Christianity was a popular belief there early in the Fourth Century and that south Wales sent several bishops to the Council of Rome.

Saint Baruch’s Church on Barry Island is one of the oldest places of historic religious interest in the region, but unfortunately, it too has been allowed to become dilapidated. Barry Island was one of the most important places of monastic interest in south Wales and around. The ancient Viking strongholds of Steep and Flat Holms also housed monks and Saint Illtyd’s Seminary in nearby Llantwit Major, which taught 2,200 disciples, was closely linked to it too.

There was an ancient Roman fort and accompanying naval dockyard on Porthkerry Point, which had obviously jutted out further into the sea than it does now and later a castle was built on their ruins. There have been found many wolf and deer bones between Sully and Barry – enough to show that they had existed there in great numbers. There have also been a large number of findings of arrowheads, flints, needles and coins, proving that people were there to prey on them too.

Barry Island was first called ‘Baruch’s Island’, as far as we know, after Saint Baruch. St. Baruch had been found on one of the beeches, washed up dead in 700 AD. He is known to have drowned when returning from Flat Holm, which was commonly used as a retreat by religious people over Lent.

He and Gwelches were both students of St. Cadoc and when they had got back from Flat Holm, they realized that they had left their enchiridion (religious manual) behind. St. Cadoc made them go back for it. Neither monk returned from the trip alive.St. Illtyd, St. Baruch’s most famous disciple was educated there too.

The island at Barry has had several names including “Island of the Saints” and “Insular of Peiros”. St. Peiro was St. Illtyd’s successor as leader of the seminary and St. Samson’s mentor. St. Doeninas was the leader of another abbey on the island at nearby Friars’ Point.

Astronomy A Guide To The Stars

Astronomy and space is all about lust for learning. Did you also know that astronomy is also one of the oldest subject’s of study for man kind? In fact, astronomy is one of the earliest sciences that humanity has ever pursued. The study of our solar system and all the other stars is not a new science, but it is a science non the less. This is a science for everyone. Strangely, though everyone you talk to can tell you there zodiac sign, but they know very little about astronomy.

While astronomy is a science, it has become more of a hobby than anything else. International boundaries blur when it comes to the study of astronomy.. Astronomy is more of an exact science than any other science that people study. When people study the stars it takes precise calculations in there observations, particularly when recording the positions of the constellations. The study of astronomy is defiantly bigger than all of us together.

The use of physics and astrophysics is extremely important when researching the stars. So is there a difference between astronomy and astrophysics? The study of astrophysics is more the study of how the stars and universe formed to begin with. Astronomy is more a matter of making observations.

The telescope is undoubtedly a very important investigative tool in astronomy. Galileo was the first person to use the telescope to aid him in the study of the stars. Purchasing a telescope is something that most people who get interested in astronomy need to do.

If you want to buy you a telescope, but it all looks confusing to you, be sure to do some analysis. Buying a telescope is almost the same as buying a car or clothing, no two people are looking for the same thing due to the fact that all people have different tastes. While you will want to get the best telescope you can find you must understand that they can cost anywhere from a hundred to a few thousand dollars so make an affordable choice for your needs.

After you purchase your telescope you will find that you can also purchase many accessories that will improve your star gazing experience. Now remember if you are just starting out, or if you just want to give astronomy a try you should purchase a telescope that is not to expensive, you can always upgrade later.

You might even ask friends if any of them have a telescope for sale. But the aim is to take advantage of the latest developments in telescope technology to make the next giant leap forward in observing. Once you get your new telescope you will find that you will use it often, as most people use there telescopes quite often for star parties or just for gazing at the stars.

Your friends and family will also be very curious. Astronomy is our tool for unlocking the knowledge of the heavens. As mentioned above, it may be a science, but it also is an outdoor nature hobby. And while it is a science, you don’t need to think about what other people think of you, because everyone thinks that it is really cool. And if you are looking for a way to spend more time with your family, astronomy could be exactly what you are looking for, due to everyone’s curious nature.

The Advantages Of Speed Reading

What have you been reading lately? In a gathering, you can soon tell who the broad-spectrum readers are, since wide readers are often quick thinkers and good public speakers too. They quickly win the adulation, respect, and fellowship of others. After all, reading expands the mind and many people think of it as one of the most satisfying pleasures known to mankind, being a combination, as it is, of mental agility and physical relaxation well above the level offered by television or the cinema.

Reading is mostly a mental activity, since you read with your mind and use your imagination to paint the setting of the detective thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pleasure that the main characters in the story are experiencing as the plot unfolds; or you contemplate the various arguments and ideas theorized by the author in that self-help book you are studying.

Learning how to read properly helps you to develop an extensive knowledge of words through reading various types of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not understand exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a good idea of what the sentence is trying to convey.

The act of reading makes you more alert and more interested in new words. Some readers even develop ‘the dictionary habit’, which means that whenever they come across a strange word, they try to work out what it possibly means by the context. If they cannot do this, they refer to a dictionary.

Similarly, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing the reader to different subjects. He/she learns to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. Just as in other forms of education, he/she is learning by actually doing and while he/she is reading he/she is automatically learning about the subject matter of the book too – a free by-product!

Reading trains you to have an active and open mind. Merely understanding the writers idea is not really good enough, you must have a response to what you read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Try to develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the writer. Always keep your mind open; understand and weigh the ideas that you read. A practical part of active reading is the development of one’s own conclusions.

Now let me mention the idea of speed reading. All of the above applies between three and ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Imagine that! – Being able to read, understand and remember all those books and articles. You would surely become well-read in your subject much more rapidly than others. Just think how that would help you at work, in school or in university …

Let me share four primary rules for effective reading and better comprehension:

1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember the saying that practice makes perfect. 2) Develop the habit of reading for main ideas. Look for the subject and predicate. Do not waste time on details or little words. 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Think of what you are reading. Do not let your attention wander somewhere else. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try purposely to read faster. Give yourself a time limit on a specific piece that you are reading.

Reading is a wonderfully stimulating mental activity. It expands your understanding and ability. You really have so much to gain by learning the joy of reading. So, go on and take down a book right today.

The Options For Electrical Colleges Around The UK

Electrical energy is definitely one of the most important areas of modern-day living. Much of our national infrastructure is dependent upon the abilities and also education among qualified domestic electricians. Characteristically, electricians operate via technical plans when setting up electric installations. They also maintain apparatus plus deal with faulty equipment. The electrical business by and large is accountable for twenty Billion pounds of trade per year within the UK alone. With all the proper certificates, you too could possibly be savouring a successful, in addition to fulfilling, electrician’s career.

In Britain, start looking principally for City & Guilds and also EAL (EMTA Awards Ltd) re-training. Learners learning through their teens usually add work experience coupled with NVQ’s to the C&G (City & Guilds) qualifications. This involves a good three or four year investment of time. Those who are more experienced commonly opt to take faster retraining part-time alongside their present careers. Seeing as most of them are preparing for work in private homes rather than industry, these people don’t require NVQ’s. Professional electrical-related training specialists could get individuals through their training systems and out and about inside of just a few months. This still lets enrolees to fulfill all the official commercial requirements, only inside a narrower field over a potentially shorter timeframe.

Who should get on very well within this kind of occupation? To become an electrician you’ll need to be confident enough to work with a number of tools effectively. Thorough attention with detail is going to be required, to conform to safe practices guidelines. You are going to have to be in a position to perform on your own, and as a consequence make choices on your own. Some electrician work requires a good measure of energy, thus it’s good to become physically in good shape. However,, most critical of all, to work for yourself you will definitely need to be resolute coupled with persistent.

Our stimulus to study to have an electro-mechanical certification oftentimes results via a hope to obtain self-employment. Certainly, it’s fair to claim that just about all mature electrician trainees set off this way. Furthermore, as this demand for electrical jobs around people’s houses continues unchecked, it is highly likely to stay. Lots of students train so they could carry out electrical jobs part-time, in order to result in increased wages. And furthermore, quite a few men or women take on electrician’s classes so as to properly fit a new kitchen in the home as an example.

And likewise with plumbers and builders, domestic electricians are inclined to benefit from numerous great recommendations – if their buyers think they have done a professional job. And so you will be costing yourself money, when you’re not well mannered as well as polite towards all people you work with.

A few domestic electricians utilized by big companies perform shifts, but most work a normal 8 hour working day through the week. Notwithstanding regional changes, the usual workforce domestic electrician in Great Britain in ‘09 earned approx. twenty-six thousand. In comparison, domestic electro-mechanical contractors working for themselves should certainly earn quite a lot more, although they’ll likewise have to put in far more flexible hrs. They have got to take into consideration their running costs though whilst costing for work.

Any schooling would certainly involve distance-learning projects to finish in the home, and your workshops plus examinations in-centre. How speedily you work through the exact training course is usually up to you. You will be fixed for life if you become a licensed electrician – why not get hold of more info on the subject of retraining right now?

Undoubtedly, a great place to begin may be on a training course that prepares you to get a EAL level two Domestic Electrical Installation Technician qualification. You can expect to discover ways to put in electrical systems, re-wire property and also fit residential electrical-related equipment. Seeing that everyone undertaking household electrical-related jobs now has to be ‘Part P’ registered, your training courses may give you an understanding of what is actually recommended. Every single jobbing electrical installer also needs to gain the C&G 2382 17th Edition IEE Cabling Regulations Credential, so study will likely be included for that too. You may also get taught and evaluated to execute various other assignments, that together could mean you can both complete and self-certify household electrician’s labor.

Presents and Gifts – 5 Top Tips

It is a global custom to give gifts for such occasions as birthdays and wedding days, but after that is where the countries start to differ. Britons and people tracing their history back there give gifts on Christmas Day as well.

However, many other Europeans give presents at Christmas on Saint Nicholas’ Day or December 6th. Non-Christian countries normally give presents at New Year.

No matter what you do in your country, giving a present requires thought. The stores are usually full of junk at these present-giving times of the year, but there is also a lot of good stuff about, at a price. The alternatives are twofold basically.

You can either make something which will be one of a kind, I suppose that this includes personalizing a shop-bought gift or you can think outside of the box, which many people find quite difficult. Personally, I find it difficult, but it does get easier the more often you try it and the better you know the person you are going to give the present to.

Here then are a few ideas which you may resolve to take on board ‘as is’, or they may inspire you on to better ideas. As I write, Christmas is coming up and then it is Saint Valentine’s day before you know it. We definitely get plenty of opportunity to practice buying presents in the West!

A Plot Of Your Own: I come from Wales in the UK (is there any other?) and up the way from me a local plot of green-belt land was in trouble. Experts said that it should be planted with trees, but the authorities did not have the funds, so they advertised six feet square plots of land for sale with a sapling of your preference on it.

You also got a title deed, directions and a photo. In addition, the tree would be taken care of for five years until it was established. I know that this is not the only place that did this and it was probably not the first either, but it makes a good gift for a teenager who is wondering what he or she can do to assist the environment.

The Key To Success: some children and their parents will be grateful for this one. Search the second-hand shops for an older or even an unusual money box. Fill the money box up to a certain level with various coins that bring that level up to the value that you want to give, but leave plenty of room for the child to put money in too. Who do you give the key to? That depends on how well you know the child.

Starting A Collection: this is a brave, but good one. If you know the child well or are prepared to take on a commitment (such as a godparent should), you could select a set of collectables, like plates, glasses or coins and buy two or three pieces to start the collection off. You can add to it every year. Others will be thankful to you too because they will jump on the band wagon.

In The Bag: if your friend is an invalid or just is temporarily in hospital, it is beneficial to provide a wicker basket or a nice bag full of useful items. Choose the items to suit your friend, but everyone might like a writing pad, a pen, a comb or brush, wet wipes or tissues, a small book of verse, a miniature radio with ear plugs, a mirror, straws, a bottle opener, only you know, but you get the idea, I’m sure.

Stamp It: you can buy a large packet of literally thousands of foreign stamps for very little. Buy a stamp album and hinges and you could start a lifelong obsession. It also gives you gift ideas for years to come too.

Biometrics The Greatest Way To Identify Individuals And Create Better Security For Your Company

Biometrics is, generally, the analysis of what can be measured of your biological features. When it comes to computer security, biometrics has to do with certification techniques that utilize differentiating physical features that can be automatically affirmed.

Biometrics has fast emerged as a new technique for identification and has already found practical applications in most hi-tech security fields. It is this particular aspect of the technique that we have selected to center on. We will try to identify how well biometrics can be applied to security and certification in various places.

A rather normal misconception amongst the flocks is that, Biometrics is available only for the rich and individuals with huge pockets. But that is a long way from the reality. Biometrics other than being very efficient, is likewise very cost-efficient.

Employing biometrics for discovering and certifying many individuals, offers some unequaled advantages. Exclusively, biometric identification provides an identification on an intrinsic part of a persons body. Soon to be relics, similar to smart cards, iron based magnetic cards, physical keys, and so on, can be stolen or left at home. Keywords might be forgotten or observed.

Finger print electronic scanners are the most widely utilized biometric devices. These devices moved into the mainstream a couple of years ago, when manufacturers began implanting the technology in laptops and regular computer keyboards, as well as offering stand-alone scanners for a wide range of security applications.

Fingerprints stay unaltered throughout an individuals life. In over 140 years of print comparison from all over the world, no two individuals prints have ever been noticed to be the same, not even the fingerprints of identical twins. Really good fingerprint scanners have been put in PDAs like the iPaq Pocket PC, so the reader technology is even easy. They may not function properly in industrial applications since it calls for clean hands to perform properly.

Fingerprint biometrics is just one of the technologies there is also voice biometrics. Comparable to face recognition, voice biometrics creates a way to authenticate an individuals identity without the persons knowledge. It is much simpler to fool (using a tape recording), it is not possible to take advantage of an analyst by simulating another person’s voice.

To sum up, biometrics has become available to every person at all ranges of prices.

News On Green Engineer Courses

It is the use of tides or wind to deliver our daily energy needs that form ‘Green Energy’. ‘Green’ basically means that all the energy is renewable. It’s interesting to note that in some instances we’re actually travelling back in time to utilise some of the older energy skill sets e.g. Wind Power (Windmills etc.) Overall, this is the method of using modern techniques to provide eco-effiency and planet friendly options.

In the home environment, one can see examples such as Solar Thermal and Solar Water Heating Collectors. For electricity created through roof-installed panels, you would need Photovoltaic Panels or PV’s. Equally important is that of Biomass Energy – which includes Stoves, Fuel, Pellets and Boilers burning Wood. Then we have the ancient energy of the Sun and the heat that comes from it – now called Ground Source Heat Pumps. Finally, we have two of the most traditional forms of energy generation that have gone through some resurgence over the last few years; these being Wind Power, Wind Turbines and Hydropower (including Water Wheels.)

Solar Thermal Energy – By using different technologies, Solar Energy is effectively made up of two types of solar panels. Initially, there is the process of obtaining hot water from the Sun via Solar Water Heating Collectors. Additionally, there is the method of converting solar radiation into electricity known as Photovoltaic – or simply Solar Electrical panels. To get the best results these panels need to be south facing at an angle of around 30 degrees from horizontal, and away from blockages.

With Solar Power being so common within the UK, it’s Solar Water Power that is most often used. Solar Water heating systems can meet the need for more than half of all hot water needs in the domestic market. The average cost of installing this type of equipment is expected to range from 500 to 1500 pounds for a DIY system, through to 2-5k for a professionally installed system.

Biomass Energy: This is a ‘capture all’ phrase which includes all natural materials. e.g. Wood, straw and poultry litter – but nowadays also includes modern ‘Energy Crops’. It is by using these materials in new ways to create energy that makes it so exciting. Furthermore, within the European Markets, the UK is one of the central producers of Biomass fuels. One of the main factors of this style of energy is the result without the impact on C02. To that end, many wood crops come from sustainable sources (as one tree is felled, another is planted in its place; thus the new tree absorbs the CO2 produced during the heating process.)

Within this field is the need for the use of ‘Energy Crops’, such as fast growing trees, e.g. Willow and Poplar or other entities grown on a Short Rotation Coppice (SRC). Of equal importance is the ability to produce dry matter – and perennial grasses are very good for this. Of equal importance, although maybe less well known, are Municipal and Agricultural Waste. As a by-product, Agricultural Waste is simply part of the farming process. Of equal importance is Municipal Waste, which comes from recycyled wood and food.

Geo-Thermal Energy Based Systems – By naturally heating the Earth, the Sun has the potential to generate both warm water and electricity. Within the UK, the constant ground source heat temperature is around 12 degrees centigrade – and can be utilised to both heat and cool buildings. Heat pumps are recognised as a very good form of power generation, generally giving back four units of energy for every one used. By using energy from solar electrical panels or wind turbines to power them, heat source pumps can be almost 100 percent renewable in energy production.

Wind Energy – An Update On Old Technology: The use of wind as a source of energy has been going on for thousands of years, especially in milling grain and pumping water. More recently, there has been the desire to deliver the energy created to the home – or to a local power grid. With regard to wind generation, it is the UK that has the highest production within Europe. Although we only utilise 1 percent of the current electricity capability from wind – we do have the ability to create 10 percent. Frankly, electricity can be realised from as little as 2p per kWh – as opposed to the current level of 2-10 p per kWh. The financial recovery process takes around 6-9 months.

Within the UK, Hydropower suits the energy generation model. Just like a thousand years ago, we are utilising the energy from water. That aside, it is fair to say that some 2 percent of the UK’s electrical load could come from this source.

A hydropower system uses a turbine to create energy from moving water. By using a dam or a natural river drop, these turbines do not require water storage. A ‘Micro-Hydro’ system creates energy through the use of dams and sluices (that are no longer a part of the national distribution system.) Although a lesser known form of electricity output, this process could supply 200mW of UK demand. When considering the installation cost of items such as this, we’re looking at somewhere between 200 pounds and 3k per kW of energy created.

The demand on ‘Green Energy’ continues to develop – in light of the energy demands worldwide. The UK remains one of the main beneficiaries of this technology.

With the rise in demand for domestic installations, both Electricians and Plumbers are well placed to take advantage of this technology. With ‘Green Energy’ rising up the political agenda in Europe, a range of financial aids and grants are becoming available. It is important to gain the correct qualifications to install these items. Electrical or plumbing training that incorporates green technology could be very useful for the future.
